Scar and Visceral Therapy

Visceral manipulation

Visceral manipulation is a gentle, hands-on manual therapy used to help your internal organs (viscera) glide smoothly within your body. Your physiotherapist can use this technique to treat abdominal pain, constipation, cramps, indigestion, and much more.

Your internal organs are surrounded by connective tissue that holds them in place in the body. Healthy connective tissue should move easily to allow organs to slide on each other when you rotate or flex your torso.

Connective tissue plays a crucial role in the body by providing support and structure to organs tissues. It facilitates movement and flexibility, allowing organs like the stomach and lungs to expand contract effectively. Additionally, it helps to protect and cushion various body parts, ensuring overall functionality and stability.

Scar therapy

Scarring is part of the body's natural healing process after tissue is damaged through surgical cuts or injuries.
When the skin is injured, our bodies produce a protein called collagen which builds up where the tissue is damaged, helping to heal and strengthen the wound.
New collagen continues forming for several months and the blood supply increases, sometimes causing the scar to become raised and lumpy.
In time, some collagen breaks down at the site of the wound and the blood supply reduces. The scar will usually become gradually smoother and softer.

Your age and skin type may also affect how a scar forms and behaves.
Scars develop both on and below the skin. Scarring below the skin can adhere to underlying structures such as muscles and joints which are called adhesions. These effect the flexibility and mobility of the structures in all the layers affected.
Scar tissue may also become hard and raised. Massage is a way of softening and flattening scars and reducing the adhesions between the different layers of the tissue, making the scar tissue more flexible. It can also help alleviate any itching and over-sensitivity of the scar.
Your scar may continue to change for up to 2 years, so early and regular scar massage will help reduce the chance of long-term problems.

During your initial appointment I will take a history and assess your posture and movement before looking at the scar and assessing your abdominal wall. during the assessment appointment I will also be looking at your breathing and may use a massage tool, silicone cups or LPG as part of your treatment. I may also give you homework to continue with between sessions or recommend products for you to use
